Research on Progesterone and Estrogen Levels and IC Symptoms
This subject remains controversial and I am not sure I understand or believe any of it myself. I do however know that hormones had something to contribute to my IC.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dr. Russell Roby founded the Texan Allergy Center in Austin, Texas.
He rus a Hormone Center.

"I think the most common cause of Interstitial Cystitis is an allergic reaction to the hormone progesterone. (For those of us whom are getting increases in progesterone due to fertiltiy drugs, birth control, meoopause, and other reasons) This is the worst hormone you could be given. It can take as long as a year to "work out" of your body. I see a lot of IC and it is always linked to a hormone imbalance. The most offensive hormone is progesterone."

"Experts believe that IC patients may benefit from the increase in the thickness of the bladder lining and the lack of progesterone during this time.progesterone increases symptoms in women with other conditions, such as migraine headaches. Alternative doctors or naturopaths who promote natural progesterone believe that natural progesterone does not provoke the side effects of synthetic progestins. However, plant progesterones are known to increase urinary frequency in women without IC."

IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE, I DON'T HAVE IC ANYMORE SO I WONDER IF THESE HORMONES COULD BE CAUSING SYMPTOMS THAT MIMIC IC SYMPTOMS.....

How can people who have too much progestrone hurting them eliminate the problem.....by an increase in Estrogen

"Estrogen plays a role in the management of many chronic conditions. The effects of estrogen seem to fight pain in a variety of conditions. There are many IC patients who avoid severe bladder, muscle and joint pain and IBS symptoms with estrogen replacement. However, there are IC patients who experience bladder pain with estrogen replacement because of the increase of mast cell secretion. What works depends on the individual patient. "

This is some of the research I have done. These are just theories. Maybe we are not all crazy and there is someone out there that can help us.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO DISUCSS ALL OF THIS WITH YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE TAKING ANYTHING. WOMEN WHOM ARE GOING THROUGH FERTILITY TREATMENTS NEED THE PROGESTERONE OR ELSE THEY WON'T GET PREGNANT. AND SOME OF THEM MAY NOT STAY PREGNANT WITHOUT PROGESTERONE SUPPORT. FOR THOSE OF US IN THIS POSITION, WE MAY JUST HAVE TO SUFFER UNTIL WE HAVE OUR CHILDREN......ALWAYS TALK WITH YOU DOCTOR ABOUT ANY QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS YOU HAVE ABOUT YOUR HORMONE LEVELS.
